Summary of 2009 harvest

The 2009 harvest in the Denmark region in the Great Southern of Western Australia is now complete and the winemakers are taking a well earned breather after a protracted vintage.
This year’s harvest is characterised by lower yields than expected, a long ripening season and generally excellent quality fruit.
The lower yields were due to the colder than normal and wet conditions experienced during a protracted period in November 2008. This upset flowering and pollination in some cases, resulting in smaller fruit.
The balmy Indian Summer has been responsible for slow but steady ripening of the red grapes leading to good flavours and moderate alcohol strength. There has been a protracted picking season from early March through to mid-May 2009. The late-picked reds are expected to be “pretty special” if not an “absolute cracker”, quoting some of the experienced producers in the area.
In general the emphasis this vintage has been on quality not quantity.
At Singlefile Estate our chardonnay crop has been outstanding and we have high expectations for a great 2009 vintage. In addition we have sourced the very best of the great reds from the area to complete our 2009 vintage.
